Medellin’s Mayor signs cooperation agreement with Dominican Republic

Mayor of Medellin, Alonso Salazar Jaramillo, welcomed on Thursday the Dominican President, who arrived at 5:35 PM at the Olaya Herrera Airport accompanied by an official delegation. The Dominican president was received with military honors on the National Police platform.

  • The President of the Dominican Republic will be in the city until Friday to sign a cooperation agreement with Medellin Mayor’s Office in the areas of transparency in municipal management, social planning, tourism and environment. Thus, the transformation of Medellin will frame the partnership relation between the city and the Dominican Republic.
  • Mayor of Medellin accompanies this Thursday night, in his first official agenda, the President Fernández Reyna at a private dinner and a talk at the Intercontinental Hotel; the latter event is led by the Chamber of Commerce of Medellin for Antioquia, and engaged entrepreneurs in the region.
  • Tomorrow, Friday, Mayor Jaramillo Salazar will officially offer the Keys to the City to the President of the Dominican Republic and sign the agreement for cooperation in consolidating the relationship between the Caribbean country and Medellin.

Mayor of Medellin, Alonso Salazar Jaramillo, officially welcomed to the city, the President of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernández Reyna, who started this Thursday an official visit during which he will narrow the fraternity links between the Caribbean country and Medellin.

At 5:35 pm, the aircraft that brought Fernández Reyna and his official delegation to Medellin landed at the Olaya Herrera Airport. Upon arrival, the Dominican president was received with military honors.

"He's very friendly, very affectionate. He is very happy to have kept the promise of being on a visit to Medellin," said Mayor Salazar minutes after the arrival of Dominican President to the city.

Upon arrival at the airport terminal, the Mayor of Medellin noticed the fact this promised visit established since February, when he was in the Dominican Republic in February this year, at the invitation of the Foundation Funlode, led by Fernández Reyna.

The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development that time invited Mayor Salazar Jaramillo to give a lecture on "Violence in Colombia, from the murders of Gaitán and Galán."

The fraternity link between Dominican Republic and Medellin will materialize tomorrow Friday, August 5th, when a cooperation agreement will be signed. Under the agreement, Medellin will provide its expertise and experience to the Dominican Republic in transparency in municipal management, urban planning and social environment.

For its part, the Dominican Republic will exchange with Medellin their experience in the tourism sector.

The signing will take place at El Castillo Museum, one of the sites that reflect the transformation of the city and reveal the international status that Medellin has been consolidating in recent years.
In the same event, the Mayor of Medellin will give the Keys to the City to Dominican president and thereby consolidate the fraternal relation between the Dominican Republic and the city.

The Dominican president's agenda began, today, at the Intercontinental Hotel, where Fernandez Reyna was escorted by the Mayor Salazar Jaramillo in a talk with 70 entrepreneurs from Antioquia. The event is led by the Chamber of Commerce of Medellin for Antioquia.

At the meeting, the Dominican President, explained to employers the scenario of trade relations with his country.

Mayor of Medellin said today that the rapprochement between the Caribbean country and the city begins to occur at the event tonight as the idea is that soon entrepreneurs can go to the Dominican Republic and strengthen business relations with the city.

An agenda on relations

Tomorrow, Friday, Mayor Salazar Jaramillo and the Dominican president, will first hold a meeting at the Rector’s Office of Eafit University, where a technical cooperation agreement with the university will be signed.

The signing of the agreement shall be in private and the President Fernández Reyna will participate but just as a witness. The cooperation agreement in academic areas the parties will define will be signed by Mayor of Medellin, Alonso Salazar Jaramillo, Secretary of State of Dominican Republic, Marco Herrera, and the Rector of Eafit University, Juan Luis Mejía.

Representatives of the delegation of the Dominican Republic, the Municipal Administration and the Administration of Eafit will also witness the signing of the agreement.

Then, Mayor Salazar Jaramillo and the Dominican President will be in a lecture he will teach in the Fudadores auditorium of Eafit. The event will be attended by teachers and students of this higher education institution. The conference will address the issue of Geopolitics in Latin America and the Caribbean and is scheduled to begin at 9:30 in the morning.

Then, in El Castillo Museum, the central moment of the visit of President of the Dominican Republic will occur. There, the mayor of Medellin and the Dominican Minister of Economy Juan Temístocles Montas, will sign an important agreement framed in transparent municipal management and strategies that will address cooperation in social planning, culture and urban environment, thereby consolidating the fraternal relation between the Dominican Republic and Medellin.

During the signing of the cooperation agreement, the Mayor of Medellín will officially give the Keys to the City to the President of the Dominican Republic.

Thus, the partnership relation will be marked by the visit of President Fernández Reyna to the city, during which the president will also hear about the transformation of Medellin.
