More than 300 American economists will meet in Medellín

From November 11th to 13th, the XV Annual Meeting of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association (LACEA) will be held at EAFIT University.
The meeting will also be attended by representatives of multilateral organizations who will show the current trends on regional economic development, now interpreted and projected after the crisis. Medellin will host between November 11th and 13th, the XV Annual Meeting of the Association of Economy of Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association (LACEA), a meeting in which about 350 experts from different countries will contribute to the economic strength of the region through research and exchange of ideas.
According to Juan José Echavarría Soto, president of LACEA 2010 and co-director of Banco de la República, this is the year for discussion. "After the international economic crisis and all that has happened, it is time for economists to analyze what we did wrong, why did not anticipate the crisis, and what measures should be taken forward to not repeat it. At the regional level it is important to ensure that Latin America continues to grow sustainably."
For his part, Juan Luis Mejía Arango, rector of EAFIT University, the institution that will host the meeting, said that this is perhaps the most important gathering of economists in this part of the world. "It is an honor to receive the event in Medellin, considering that it is usually done in big cities. It shows confidence in the city."
LACEA 2010 will also be attended by multilateral organizations like the Inter-American Development Bank, World Bank, the Andean Development Corporation, the International Monetary Fund and the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLA). These organizations will have the opportunity to present their best publications, diagnosis and studies on those trends that today are used to interpret and project the regional economic development.
"LACEA 2010 is not just an academic exchange of knowledge and research, but also a platform used by people belonging to these bodies to show the new models, the economic idea they have and what are the strategic issues concerning them," says José Alberto Naranjo Ramos, head of the Department of Economics at EAFIT and one of the coordinators of the event.
The event will also have representatives of Iberoamerican central banks, research institutes, private sector and students of economics from various universities in the world.
